These maps, prepared by Dr. Howard D. Mooers of the University of Minnesota,
Duluth, give an overview of glacial retreat in the region. Advances of the
ice during temporary cold periods are not shown. The size of Glacial Lake
Agassiz varied greatly over the centuries. At its peak it covered most of
southern Manitoba as well as the area shown here. In its later stages it
drained to the south through Glacial River Warren, which joined the
Mississippi, carving out the valley now occupied by the Minnesota River.
