These maps, prepared by Dr. Howard D. Mooers of the University of Minnesota, Duluth, give an overview of glacial retreat in the region. Advances of the ice during temporary cold periods are not shown. The size of Glacial Lake Agassiz varied greatly over the centuries. At its peak it covered most of southern Manitoba as well as the area shown here. In its later stages it drained to the south through Glacial River Warren, which joined the Mississippi, carving out the valley now occupied by the Minnesota River. Click on maps to enlarge them.
